Prepare for JC2 H2 Math by making the foundations usable
Before adding more content, find out which JC1 ideas you can still explain and apply without a model answer. Then build a routine that keeps earlier topics active while school lessons move forward.
A useful starting point
A useful JC2 plan combines three things: repair specific prerequisite gaps, keep up with the school’s current topic and revisit earlier work through mixed questions. Use the syllabus for your examination year and the school’s teaching order rather than assuming every JC covers topics at the same time.
Start with the correct syllabus and school plan
For students taking A-Levels in 2027, SEAB’s 2027 school-candidate syllabus listing identifies H2 Mathematics as 9758 and links its official syllabus and MF27 formula list. Confirm the document for your own examination year.
The syllabus describes what is assessed; it does not give every school the same JC1/JC2 teaching calendar. Ask what your school will cover next, which holiday tasks are expected and when the next assessment is. Use those facts to order your preparation.
Audit readiness with working, not confidence alone
Choose a few representative questions from topics already taught. Attempt them without opening a solution first. Check whether you can:
- Rearrange equations and inequalities while keeping restrictions visible
- Explain what a graph or function statement means before manipulating it
- Choose a method and give a reason for it
- Show the required working and interpret the final result
Label each area “independent,” “needs a prompt” or “not yet understood.” These labels describe the current attempt, not your ability as a person. If you needed a prompt, record which cue was missing.
A short diagnostic is a starting point rather than proof of complete topic mastery. Include a changed or unfamiliar question before deciding that an area is secure.
Keep three types of practice in the week
Current-topic work: use the week’s lessons and tutorials to settle new definitions and methods while they are fresh. Ask about unresolved steps before the next topic builds on them.
Targeted repair: reserve a manageable block for one earlier gap. Do not let every study session become a full restart of JC1.
Mixed retrieval: revisit previously taught topics without the topic label or a worked example announcing the method. This checks whether you can recognise what is needed.
See an illustrative weekly rotation
After the current lesson: explain one new idea and attempt a short related question independently.
A separate repair block: revisit the first wrong step from a recent functions question, then try a fresh version.
Later in the week: attempt a small mixed set from earlier topics and review the decisions that were slow or uncertain.
This is a flexible example, not Sterling’s class timetable or a required number of study hours. Adjust it to school work, other subjects and the gaps shown in your attempts.
Build towards timed papers in stages
If a method is not yet understood, a full timed paper may only repeat the same difficulty. First work through a focused question with enough time to explain the steps. Next try a short mixed set, then timed sections and full papers when that is appropriate to your stage of preparation.
After timed work, distinguish “I knew how but ran out of time” from “I spent too long because I could not choose a method.” They need different next tasks. A timing plan should account for the actual examination instructions and the school’s guidance.
Keep calculator practice purposeful: know what you are asking it to calculate, what the output means and what mathematical working the question still requires.
Use each review to change the next attempt
Choose one recurring issue, write a specific next-time check and verify it on a new question. For example, after choosing the wrong inverse branch, state the sign forced by the original domain before taking a square root.
The inverse-functions guide and error-review examples show how to turn that principle into working. Use the MF27 guide to practise locating a result, while remembering that the booklet does not choose the method.
If you are still recovering from promos, begin with the promos review plan. If you want extra support, bring the evidence from your attempts to a discussion about JC2 H2 Math lessons.
